From the ED's Desk - Providing affordable, accessible, & appropriate housing

We recently completed our annual meeting, during which we reviewed our occupancy statistics. The data revealed both positive and unfortunate developments. In fiscal year 2025, three tenants relocated to be closer to home and family, and two moved into newly constructed apartments—which is wonderful news. However, nine residents either passed away or required a higher level of care.

As aging in place becomes more common, we must consider the unique challenges of aging with mental illness and how to best support those individuals. While therapeutic behavioral services are often included in treatment for individuals in our housing, aging may bring additional needs—such as the support of a full-time aide or transfer to a facility like a nursing home or geropsychiatric unit (GPU). A state-licensed Community Residence does not have the specialized staff necessary to provide the level of care required by many residents who develop age-related clinical conditions in addition to pre-existing mental health issues.

To meet these challenges, we must collaborate with our partners to develop appropriate housing options for individuals experiencing both mental health conditions and age-related decline. Fellowship Housing remains committed to providing safe, affordable housing for our residents. We are also dedicated to working with clinical teams to identify more suitable living arrangements—ones that offer the medical, emotional, and geriatric psychiatric support needed to ensure the highest possible level of independence and well-being.
