From the ED's Desk - NIMBY

Recently, the local paper featured an article about a new developmental disability facility in Bow, which received mixed reactions from the community. The term NIMBY—an acronym for Not In My Backyard—is often associated with real estate developments and infrastructure projects, but it is increasingly relevant to facilities like the one that recently opened on Stack Drive in Bow.

As an organization that has been involved for nearly sixty years in developing housing for individuals living with mental health challenges, we have encountered similar community responses. I have personally provided public testimony in support of zoning variances and participated in community meetings to address concerns raised by neighbors regarding our projects.

The successful integration of these facilities depends on open dialogue with the surrounding neighborhood, along with a clear process for addressing concerns as they arise. Timely and respectful communication is essential.

Fellowship Housing Opportunities, Inc. believes that supportive housing located within the neighborhoods where individuals live, work, and contribute is a proven way to help people with disabilities successfully assimilate into the community.
