From the ED's Desk - FHO Tradition

Memorial Day brings many celebrations and traditions. For my grandmother, it meant permission to break out the white shoes and white purse. For my wife, it meant attending the “double parade,” watching it first on Main Street and then walking over to State Street to see it again. For our family, it meant visiting cemeteries and planting flowers in remembrance of loved ones who had passed away. For my grandfather, it was time to plan the vegetable garden.

I think the gardening tradition may become the Memorial Day tradition here at Fellowship House. As you may recall, last year we opened our community garden at our Allison Street residential building, and it has been a tremendous success with residents. One of our board members donated seeds, and in April our program activity focused on planting them. Residents, along with visitors passing by, have enjoyed watching the seeds grow in the windows of our offices. This month, we transplanted the seedlings into separate containers so they will be ready for planting in the garden.

The residents are excited to get these plants into the ground and tend to them throughout the growing season until harvest. We will provide weekly transportation for the gardeners, and at our annual picnic, we hope to enjoy the results on hamburgers or in fresh salads. For me, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the anticipation, excitement, and pride our residents experience through the community garden.
