In the mid-1960's, advances in the treatment of mental
illness allowed patients of mental hospitals to regain their
sense of self and their abilities.
Medications to
calm troubling symptoms - and public policy directed at
moving people out of institutions - combined to initiate the
community mental health movement.
Fellowship Housing
Opportunities, Inc. (previously known as "Opportunity
House, Inc.") was founded in 1966 by a group of community
leaders who were concerned about providing decent housing to
the number of people being released into Concord from the
New Hampshire Hospital. In its early years, the corporation
operated two "halfway houses" that offered a safe and
comfortable setting for people making this difficult
transition.
